Troop 130 was founded in 1975.
Founders
George and Sylvia Thullen, along with other parents who had been involved for a number of years with Troop 77, responded in 1975 to popular demand and founded Troop 130 on this side of Lake Geneva. George and Sylvia are still very active in the Troop.
Base
The Troop has been based for the last 28 years at “La Chat”, The International School of Geneva, La Châtaigneraie Campus in Founex, Switzerland. The Troop and Scouts have always enjoyed a happy relationship with the school and staff.
Membership
Troop 130 welcomes all boys aged between 11 and 17 inclusive, regardless of nationality, language or religion, or of which school they attend. While English is the most actively spoken language of the Troop, a good understanding of the language is sufficient. The Troop typically has between 30 to 40 boys registered at any time, with varying backgrounds, ages and nationalities.
Aims
Troop 130 aims to provide boys with camaraderie, fun, excitement and opportunities to develop new skills, through offering a wide Scouting experience that includes adventurous outdoor activities and guidance. They are also encouragement in advancing to their full potential through the Scouting principles and advancement programmes.
Affiliation
Troop 130 is affiliated to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), which provides the legal and practical frameworks within which the Troop operates.
Chartered Organization
All BSA troops must have a ‘Chartered Organization’. Our Chartered Organization is “Parents and Friends of Scouting”, without whom Troop 130 could not exist; we as a Troop are responsible to them.
The Charter
Our Charter is signed by Sylvia Thullen on behalf of “Parents and Friends of Scouting”, and is renewed yearly.
“TAC” Transatlantic Council
Troop 130 is part of the Horizon District of Boy Scouts of America “Transatlantic Council”, the European headquarters for the Boy Scouts of America based in Mannheim, Germany. We pay an annual fixed sum per Scout to the council. In return, they organize special camps such as Camp Alpine in Kandersteg and authorize outings and events. We also use the services of TAC when ordering uniforms, badges etc and arrange training. Advance notice of all outdoor events is sent to TAC for clearance and issuance of the appropriate tour permit.
Geneva Roundtable
The Roundtable meets periodically with the Geneva based Boy Scouts of America Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, group leaders, Unit Commissioner, District Commissioner and a TAC representative to discuss Scouting and to organize joint events.
