Registration Day – Parent Night
Posted by admin in Information, Pack Events on September 14, 2011
REGISTRATION for the 2011 – 2012 is now open.
On the 13th of September there was a Open Door for new parents interested in the scouting movement. This is open to all existing and new 6 to 11 year old boys who wish to participate. Dario made a presentation which I have inclueded in this post. Take a moment to look at the presentation.
If you weren't able to make it to the Parents Night and are still interested in having your son join Scouts. Don't worry, you can still join. You just need to contact our Den coordinator, Tracey Goodman (goodmant@who.int)
More information about this can be found in the registrations page.
PineWood Derby – 2010
Posted by jmoore in Pack Events, Pack Meetings on November 12, 2010
This years PIneWood Derby was held on the 6th of November, and the sun was shinning all day for us. We had 90 cars that registered and ran 57 heats.
The crew arrived early to set up the cafeteria, bbq area, bake sale, and second hand toys tables. Everyone was working really hard right up till it was time for registration.
The boys were asked a series of grilling questions in an effort to weed out those cars that were "completely Father" built. No, the question were to help the people registering the cars determine which race category to place the boy's car.
Some cars had to go through last minute weight adjustments. Everything was used to bring the weights of the cars up to 141.75 grams/ 5 oz. We had some boys who at the last minute were gluing on rocks for the garden outside. Other boys had their parents loading the car up with money. I wonder why my parents never load my car up with lots of money?
Finally at 12:15 we had all the cars registered and the judges were picking their way through the 90 cars marking their ballots with their favorite choices.
The rest of us were out at the bbq pit munching on great burgers and hot dogs that the Bears were cooking up. Those Dads did a great job flipping burgers, some even remember flipping burgers when they were teenagers. The Moms, they were great. They had all the fixings and condiments spread out and ready to go so that you could construct your own unique burger.
At 12:45 some of us had to meet with this year Derby coordinators for race assignments. Yours truly was picked to line up the cars on the track, and drop the gate to the race of each heat.
We originally said that the races would start at 13:00, but unfortunately we slipped and the first race started at 13:05. I know…, we were 5 minutes late. Our technical wizard CubMaster Steve ran the races, we had a few mishaps on the track. Track Judge Patrick was key in deciding which heats would have to be re-run. Race team was smoking, we got through 57 heats and finished the races by 14:45.
CubMaster Steve then announced the winners for each level and everyone went home happy. The End!!!!
But Wait….! Who's going to clean up the big mess. Thankfully Den Leader Stephanie and company were hard at work and got the cafeteria back into a better shape than when the set-up crew arrived in the morning. Now its's "The End!". Another wonderful PineWood Derby done and boys thinking what kind of designs they will have for next year.
The results will be published soon.
Thanks everyone for your help and participation in this year Derby.
Pinewood Derby – race format
Posted by admin in Pack Events, Pack Meetings on October 12, 2009
In advance of our Pinewood Derby I wanted to communicate how the races will be structured this year.
We will have 5 groups of cars for the initial heats:
Tigers – Cub/Parent
Wolves – Cub/Parent
Bears – Cub/Parent
Webelos (I & II) – Cub/Parent
Cub-Only cars for all years
For the race software to work properly, each group must contain at least 12 racers. If this year is like previous years, most, if not all, of the Tigers, Wolves, and Bears will be Cub/Parent cars which means that there will not be enough cars to have a separate Cub-Only group for these years. The two Webelos years will be combined but split between Cub-Only and Cub/Parent groups. So, if there are any Cub-Only in the younger years they will be included with the Webelos Cub-Only group.
Each racer will compete in 4 heats against others only from their group (i.e. Tigers will not race against Webelos). The slowest of the 4 times will be thrown out. So, for example if a car jumps the track on one race it does not necessarily mean that the car will be relegated to the bottom of the standings.
The top 4 racers with the fastest total time for the three heats that count will advance to the Grand Finale. These 20 cars (4 cars x 5 groups) will compete over 2 heats against each other. Again the slowest of the two times will be thrown out. The Grand Finale will be used ONLY to determine the First, Second and Third place overall finisher for Cub-Only and Cub/Parent cars. The top finishers by year and den will be taken from the preliminary rounds.

Escalade
Posted by admin in Pack Events on November 27, 2007
Plan for Saturday 1 December 2007 Escalade Marmite Race
Meeting time:
17:45 on the steps of the Grand Theatre, which is on the opposite side of the Place de Neuve to the Parc des Bastions
Race starts at 18:30. We will move from the Grand Theatre steps to the start point at 18:15. There are hundreds of people and it takes a good 10 minutes to move this short distance. If you have not arrived by 18:15, you will probably not be able to run.
Phil & Jo will have the dossards and chips for every participant, and will give them to each den leader to give out to the boys and parents. If you have chosen to register yourselves separately, you will have to pick up your dossards and chips yourselves.
Race details
If you want to know more about the Marmite, or other races during the day, have a look on www.escalade.ch
Getting there:
Parking close to the race can be extremely difficult and it is a good idea to give yourselves plenty of time to park and get to the meeting point.
You can park and ride from further out, or take a train or a tram.
If the weather is terrible:
The race will still go ahead and lots of us will still run or walk through the rain! If you choose not to participate on the day, please can you let Phil & Jo know so that we don’t wait for you.
Pinewood Derby Update
Posted by admin in Information, Pack Events on November 5, 2007
Thank-you all very much for the offers of help for set up. We have 2 from
den 8 and 1 from den 4 joining den 7 so we’re all set. Julie has the keys
arranged for cafeteria and the BBQs will be there. She will meet us on
saturday morning. I will meet with Tyrrian before that just to check out
exactly what’s in the store.
BBQ Lunch:
Hot dogs, Burgers, Steak sandwiches – all organised and cooked by the Bear
dens. Available from 12 noon.
Cake Sale:
Den 1 will be holding a bake sale at the Pinewood Derby. Please help by
making cakes for sale and bring them on the day. Cup cakes for children are
very popular.
Nearly New Sale:
Den 2 is organising the nearly new sales this year. Please bring Books,
DVDs etc, children’s toys, sports gear. Bring it along at the start of the
sale . . . .
All money raised will go towards the Cub Scout charity Asskam.
Games:
There will also be games organised by Den 5.
For the race itself I didn’t get all the answers on who is entering each
category so what seems to make most sense based on the information I have is
that we set up the race to run 3 separate categories. Tigers and Wolves,
Bears and Wolves (to keep den8 intact) and Webelos. Siblings join the den
of their brother. We have more than 70 racers. The adult race will be held
at the end (of maybe just before the finale).
The boys will be registered by den either as having made the car themselves
(help cutting the basic shape if needed but no other help) or having made it
with help. With the new race software we have we are going to set up a
"dynamic race" meaning that the next rounds are set up based on the results
of previous rounds. Everyone should race 6 times with many different (but
not all other) racers and on different race lanes. The subsequent rounds
are set up to give as many cars as possible the possibility to win a race as
it matches the closest cars together. It does still come out with clear
winners. The set up means that the fastest cars are not necessarily those
who are winning the most races. . . . but they are still the ones who will
make it to the finale for the pack.
See you all on saturday

2007 Pack 130 Pinewood Derby Day
at La Chat Campus
Saturday, 10th November 2007
(Registration from 11:30 to 12:30 – Lunch at La Chat – Races start 13:00
PACK 130 Pinewood Derby Official Rules and Regulations
Please read the following carefully before your cub scout starts to build the car.
To try and move away from recent races where cars designed and built by some of the boys have to complete against cars designed and built by parents, we are adopting the following rules for the 2007 Pinewood Derby. Obviously we can’t check on how much adult involvement there is in building each car but we rely on the cub scouts / parents to enter a car in one of the 2 categories listed below . . . and parents can build a car for the adult race if they’re interested to try their hand at building the fastest car .
There will be 2 categories of cars in this year’s cub scout pinewood derby race:
1. Cars which are built by the boys (almost) entirely themselves. The only adult help allowed is during the cutting stage – HELPING the boys in guiding power tools or holding the wood and supervising while the boys use a hand saw. The boys should be encouraged to design a car which they are able to cut themselves. The design, sanding, painting, applying weights, decoration etc. is 100% the work of the boys. Of course the boys will need encouraged throughout the project but can still make the car “entirely” themselves.
2. The boy and adult can make the car together as a project. The adult can be more involved in this build but it is not the intent that the adult cuts and sands while the Scout watches – parents can shape with power tools and then direct the rest of the action while showing the boy each step in building the car. The scout should still feel a real sense of achievement for what HE has built.
As in previous years (excl 2006) it is possible to run an adult race for those parents who are interested. This is obviously much better than getting too involved in the cub scouts’ cars and entering a car in the cub scout race which is primarily adult designed and built. As the cub scout motto says, it’s all about the boys doing their best – not about winning races with a car they had limited involvement in building . . . . . so think of all those who are taking part and resist the urge to take over.
Pack Campout
Posted by admin in Pack Events on May 16, 2007
I am delighted to announce that this year’s annual Pack 130 camp out will be held on the 2nd/3rd June at:
Camping Chez Langin
Chemin des Ecureuils
74330 CHOISY
www.chezlangin.com
The cost is Euro7.00 per person per night.
Please appoint a den representative and ask them to confirm the den’s attendance to me by the 27th May so I can confirm the reservation to the site.
I can also plan where each Den can pitch. I will be there from mid Saturday morning.
DIRECTIONS
The site is approximately 25-30 minutes (26.5km) drive from the Bardonet Douanes.
From Geneva take the N201 to Annecy and immediately after crossing the "Pont de la Caille" (the big bridge spanning the gorge), take the first right (approx 50m).
It’s well signposted but just in-case continue along the road for 2.0km until you arrive at a crossroads and go straight across.
After 1.4km you’ll arrive at a roundabout and go straight across (around it).
After 1.7km take a right and after 0.4km come to another crossroads and go straight across.
After another 0.4km turn right into the campsite. Alternatively if you go on the website you’ll get their GPS location.
2.30pm OPENING CEREMONY
It’s a lovely location with great walks so the earlier you arrive the more you’ll get out of it.
However I know that many boys are members of various clubs and will have commitments on Saturday morning.
We will therefore formally open the weekend at 2.30pm on Saturday with a Pack flag ceremony, by which time you are expected to have pitched your tents.
2.45pm GAMES
After the flag ceremony we will play some Pack games together, ie: – Football - Softball/Baseball - French Cricket - Volleyball (there is a court and net there) .
Each Den should organise one team game to be managed by parents from the den. Please appoint a den representative, who should let me know what game will be offered by their den.
4.30- 6pm FREE TIME
6.30pm COMMUNAL BBQ
8pm -9pm CAMPFIRE
Songs, stories and smores, marshmallows etc around a fire. Please bring a joke/story to tell.
Cub Uniform will be required for this part of the evening.
10.30pm LIGHTS OUT
SUNDAY MORNING HIKE – 9.30 am
After breakfast I shall arrange a hike. It would be nice if as many people as possible can join it.
We will be back at camp for lunch.
Those who wish to picnic can do so and then after a clear up (leave no trace) we can all return home.
Each Den will be responsible for ensuring that they clear up their pitch – and the person responsibe for the den will do each den’s site clearance.
FOOD
Please bring all the food and drink you will want to eat whatever it may be, but it should be BBQable for the Saturday evening.
Aside from the BBQ which will be for the whole pack, you may wish to coordinate the other meals within your Dens.
SWIMMING POOL
And finally, there is a small unheated swimming pool there (unfenced but away from the tents). If you want to bring swimming stuff it’s your call.
Geneva Summer Hike
Posted by admin in Information, Pack Events on April 30, 2007
Here is some information to help you plan for the Pack hike up to the top of
the Dôle. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Tom
Windmuller or Cathy Overly .

Date: Saturday, 12 May.
Time: We will meet at 14h00. The hike will start promptly at 14h15 and is
expected to take about 2 1/2 – 3 hours.
Meeting Point: We will meet at the Chalet de la Dôle, next to the cable car
that goes to the skyguide facility at the top of the Dôle. Directions to
the meeting point follow below.
The hike: The hike itself is relatively short (about 1 1/4 hours each way)
but steep and a little strenuous. Our son had no trouble doing it at the
age of 6 but it is not for those with heart conditions, etc. There is a
path but it is not smooth. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
What to bring: We would recommend:
* sturdy hiking boots (and socks to prevent blisters)
* walking stick if you have one
* water, especially if the weather is dry and hot
* small snack (e.g. fruit, cookies, chocolate or nuts) to eat when we pause at the large skyguide dome at the top.
* sun cream
* rain gear if it looks threatening
* cub uniform is optional
Non-hikers: For those of you who would prefer not to join the boys on the
hike, we would recommend that after you drop off your son(s), you drive a
short distance (2-3 km) to the Barillette, a mountaintop restaurant where
you can enjoy the view and order coffee, drinks or a meal.
Directions to the Chalet de la Dôle:

1) From Geneva, take the autoroute toward Lausanne to the Nyon exit.
2) At the Nyon exit, turn left, go over the autoroute and past the Volvo
dealer and Signy shopping center on your left.
3) Go straight at the first traffic circle, then pass the Avia petrol
station and the Moulin Motel on your left.
4) At the second traffic circle, turn left, following the signs to Gingins
and Cheserex.
5) Proceed about 2 km along this road to Cheserex. (Note that a little
more than halfway to Cheserex, the road to Gingins will turn off to the
right. At this fork you proceed straight ahead — or slightly left — to
Cheserex.)
6) As you enter Cheserex, bear right at the T-intersection. About 30
meters later the main road will bend to the left but you proceed straight
ahead, passing the Plantins restaurant on your right.
7) At the next intersection (Volkswagen dealer on the far left corner) do
not follow the main road, but go straight ahead, following signs for La Dôle
and Floretaz. You will then pass the VW dealer on your left.
Continue on this narrow lane about 2 km, passing first through some
fields and then starting to climb through a residential area. Continue on
until the road come to a T-intersection.
9) At the T-intersection, turn left onto the route de la Dôle, following a
sign for the Abbaye de Bonmont. From here it is about 11-12 km to the
meeting point.
10) About 1 km later (or less), take the first turn to the right, following
signs to La Dôle and the Barillette.
11) Continue up this winding road, always following signs for La Dôle and
the Barillette and almost always turning uphill at an intersection.
12) When you get to the top of the hill, turn left, toward the Dôle,
following the sign for skyguide. Continue to the end of the road where the
cable car and Chalet de la Dôle are situated and park in the small parking
lot. If the parking lot is full, park along the side of the road leading to
the Chalet.
